Personality:
Funny and outgoing, personable: Upon first encounter, one would think of Eric Matthews as an idiot, a goofball, hilarious, outgoing, and weird. He enjoys jokes, living it up, and dealing with other people--he's actually very good at it. For example, when he works at the student union in Pennbrook University, he's great at dealing with customers, is friendly, and gives the place a great vibe to be. He has a high emotional intelligence and wisdom despite his silly nature, and other characters eventually see this in him enough to use him as a mediator when there's problems between other characters.
Clever: Eric, despite what he seems like due to his goofy personality, is actually very smart, too. Other characters have a hard time believing this unless they've seen it firsthand, like his roommate Jack, who he helps with studying sometimes. This also makes Eric pretty efficient and good at anything he needs to do when he gets a job--for example, he's successful at being a security guard, a salesperson at his dad's store, a student union attendant, and even eventually in the spinoff series of Girl Meets World, a mayor and a senator. He was even a successful Shakespearean actor. His agreeable and friendly personality make him great at anything that is customer-facing. One time, he helped an entire library full of stressed-out college students to relax and making them all get to know each other, which helped all of them get good grades--however despite his social success, he forgot to study and got a bad grade.
Anxiety and low self-esteem: Despite his intelligence, Eric gets terrible grades unless he really tries. It's to the point where his mentor and former teacher, Mr. Feeny, states that Eric could get passing grades in his sleep--and has, actually, but he's lazy and doesn't try. Eric also has anxiety with tests and grades, he even failed his drivers license test when he first took it. He has low self-esteem that's not just related to school but also to his everyday life. He fails the SAT, and feels terrible about being unable to get into college. He is so anxious about it he tries to find other careers so that he doesn't have to go to college. It's implied that Eric is afraid to apply himself because he's afraid that he won't be good enough even when he does his best.
When he finally takes the SAT again he passes it and gets 200 more points than he did before, and gets into Pennbrook college. He becomes terribly anxious again once school rolls around and he's afraid he doesn't belong in college, but is helped by an imaginary Mr. Feeny that helps him study and he starts getting good grades, even better grades than his roommate Jack.
Not wanting to be left out: His low self-esteem and anxiety may be the cause of why he's such a goofball and why most of the other characters, including his parents, see and treat him as such. It's easier to act the clown if that's what everyone expects of you. Eric often goes to Mr. Feeny for advice because Mr. Feeny, even when he's exasperated, respects Eric and treats him the way he wants to be treated. Eric cares and loves for him like he's part of his family. When he tries to be taken seriously most people, especially his family and friends, often don't take him seriously, or leave him out of things, which is one of his worst fears. He hates being left out, from being left out of college when everyone else was going to college, losing his roommate Jack to an evil witch named Millie, losing Jack to Rachel his other roommate, his dad not treating him the same way as his brother Cory, to Cory leaving him out of his life. He's very earnest and loves pretty much everybody even if he's upset or annoyed by them, and gets upset when they don't extend the same courtesy to him.
Caring: Eric used to love going out on dates, but later on as he grew up he mostly grew out of it and concentrated mostly on hanging out with his friends Jack and Rachel. He enjoys going out dancing and to restaurants, but will often bring Jack along. He's also very good with kids, and almost adopted an orphan named Tommy once, but the orphanage convinced him to let Tommy be adopted by a loving family that could take better care of him. It was the hardest thing that Eric had to do. Relationship-wise, even throughout the spin-off series in the future, he never has a significant other. It's implied that Eric had a crush on Jack and had never actually gotten over him, and the reason he wanted to date Rachel in the first place was because of the competition with Jack. He meets Jack again in the spinoff series, and tries to save Jack from the evil company he's working for.
Suitability: Eric is one of the purest souls on the show and would actually survive pretty well in a world full of things trying to corrupt you. He's from a point in his canon where he wants to live in a new city and start out a new chapter of his life, and wouldn't mind staying in a new, strange would and would think it's pretty cool. He'd also be fairly terrified all the time, but would also consider himself a main character in what is undoubtedly someone's horror movie. He's pretty sure he's a fan favorite.
Powers/Abilities: Believe it or not, Eric does have supernatural abilities in canon.
1. Magic use: Eric has canonically used magic. He read a book called Witchcraft for Dumb-Dumbs and learned a counterspell--which was just using SPF 45 sunscreen and Zinc Oxide to ward off a light from the crystal of death which would have killed Jack and his brother Shawn, and given immortality to the coven of witches that had tied them up.
2. Psychic powers: Eric had the ability to predict the future after he hit his head, getting visions after sneezing. Jack tried to make Eric use the power for greed, but Eric got a premonition that he had to save someone--turned out that someone was Jack. Eric never really loses this ability even though it doesn't show up for the rest of the season, but it shows up again in the spinoff series Girl Meets World, where Eric gets flashes of insight and information after sneezing. It seems to be its most powerful when he's using it to help his friends or he's around Jack.
In the world of Apocalypse How, this power would be very unreliable and be more potent when it's someone he cares about. When he sneezes he gets a nosebleed, a massive headache, or passes out, and the vision or information insight is painful or terrifying. It could also cause hallucinations and make him see terrible things happen to people he cares about and be difficult to parse between the actual vision and nightmarish side-effects.
Entity Affinity: Eric's entity would be the Lonely--he hates being left out of things, hates when people overlook him or ignore him, or don't consider him or his feelings, for emotional isolation. His friends and family are the most important things to him, and he gets very upset when they forget him.
